The IRS processes most e-filed refunds within 21 days. The fastest way to check your status is the Where's My Refund? tool at IRS.gov or the IRS2Go mobile app.
How to Check Your Refund Status
- Go to IRS.gov/refunds
- Enter your Social Security number, filing status, and exact refund amount
- View your current status
When Can You Check?
- E-filed return: 24 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt
- Paper return: 4 weeks after mailing
- Amended return (1040-X): 3 weeks after filing
What the Status Messages Mean
- Return Received: IRS has your return and is processing it
- Refund Approved: Refund has been approved and will be sent
- Refund Sent: Direct deposit initiated or check mailed
Why Is My Refund Delayed?
Refunds can be delayed if your return requires additional review, contains errors, is affected by identity theft screening, or claims the EITC or Additional Child Tax Credit (by law, these cannot be issued before mid-February).
